Of Animals and People

As a child, he wanted to be a zookeeper in the monkey enclosure; today, Kristan Pol is in charge of reception at the Swissôtel Kursaal Bern. And when he tells the story, he can’t help but smile himself.

He has had a soft spot for chimpanzees and gorillas ever since he was a child. However, science wasn’t one of his strong points at school, so his dream of a career in this field remained just that – a dream. Instead, his path led him to Switzerland ten years ago. A country he knew from numerous holidays and which he took an immediate liking to. It was here that he discovered his passion for the hospitality industry. Today, the 32-year-old and his team ensure that guests feel welcome and at ease.

At first glance, these are two completely different worlds, but there are similarities: patience, attentiveness and empathy are just as essential when dealing with animals as they are with people.

Kristan Pol simply cannot do without animals. Along with his partner, two rabbits have also come into his life – ‘Bembe’ and ‘Wendy’ – and a third, ‘Cini’, joined them later. These cute little fur-faced friends want for nothing; even a weekly pampering session with claw clipping and grooming is part of their routine.

The animals bring peace and relaxation to his everyday life. It’s a welcome contrast to his work at reception, where no two days are the same and every day holds surprises.

However, a part of his dream lives on. Kristan Pol can imagine spending half a year working as a volunteer at an animal centre in Borneo, the Congo or Rwanda. Until then, he is content with his three rabbits. He greets his guests at reception every day with the same patience and attention he shows his pets.
