Taking responsibility and growing

At the Kursaal Bern, the training of apprentices has been a top priority for many years. The fact that there are 21 apprentices across five different trades speaks for itself. Supporting the next generation is an integral part of the company’s culture.

The Kursaal Bern has recently been awarded Level 2 ‘TOP Training Organisation’ status. This accolade confirms what has long been standard practice within the organisation: apprentices should not merely assist with tasks, but take on responsibility and actively develop their skills.

To achieve certification, four vocational trainers completed several further training courses. These focused on questions such as: How can apprentices be supported in an even more targeted way? How can they be given more personal responsibility? How can practical skills be developed and strengthened?

The insights gained were put into practice straight away: a commercial apprentice is independently planning an entire team event; a cookery apprentice is taking charge of the planning, purchasing and preparation of her own cake; and a hospitality and housekeeping apprentice is designing the complete floral decoration for a private dining event. All are working independently, making their own decisions, supported by clear feedback from their vocational trainers.

Beyond the award itself, the certification has provided fresh impetus. The vocational trainers will exchange ideas regularly in future. And regular apprentice outings are also set to resume.

The ‘TOP Training Organisation’ certificate is awarded by a foundation committed to high-quality vocational training in Switzerland.
