Bird hotel in the small Kursaal forest
In February 2024 we put up 20 nesting boxes with two entrance holes of different sizes for cavity-nesting birds, i.e. tits, pied flycatchers, sparrows and nuthatches. The birds can take care of their offspring there in peace and quiet in the spring when their breeding season begins. Birds need good breeding conditions: According to the Sempach Ornithological Institute, around 40 % of Swiss bird species are endangered.
We bought the nesting boxes from the Rüttihubelbad social therapeutic community. People with support needs work there. To make their nesting boxes, they only use solid wood, which mostly comes from their own forest, is processed in a resource-saving way and is not treated with chemicals.
KinderInsel Foundation
The KinderInsel foundation set up its green and white lighthouses with us from autum 2022 to April 2023. In them, we collected Donations for this charitable foundation go to the children's clinic at Inselpital Bern and helps their efforts in creating a suitable environment and providing top-quality medical care for children. And they also care for parents and siblings. Because a sick child always affects a whole family. The lighthouse has now gone on a journey and we are planning to take it out again in the summer.
StattLand
Since the beginning of the year, we have regularly welcomed StattLand, a Bernese association that specializes in the lively communication of everyday history and lifeworlds. It deals with social, cultural and political issues and networks knowledge and people. We support it and open our doors by arrangement and allow interested people a look behind our scenes.
Commitment to the Swiss Soup Day
It has almost become a tradition for us to take part in the Schweizer Tafel soup day. We sliced 300 kilos of rescued pumpkins and other vegetables and turned them into a delicious soup. This was served at the 20th Soup Day organised by Schweizer Tafel. With our support, we were able to do two good deeds in one go: We prevented food waste and the donations for the delicious soup help people at risk of poverty.
Amenities for a good cause
We donated about 10,000 small tubes of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from the hotel for a good cause: to the Sleeper association, which has been running a shelter and a street kitchen in Bern for more than 20 years.
Dispensers for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel have been in our hotel rooms since the beginning of the year - because it is more sustainable and because we offer plastic-free hotel rooms. Throwing away the small tubes from our warehouse was out of the question. Throwing away unused things cannot be sustainable.
