Running routes in Bern

Running offers a different way to experience Bern. Whether along the Aare or on the Gurten, there are beautiful routes for runners of all abilities and with all amounts of time.

A quick run

From the Kursaal Bern, we head down to the Aare and are already at the Altenbergsteg bridge. From there, we simply follow the riverbank path out of town, past the botanical gardens, grazing goats and woolly pigs in summer, the Lorrainebad swimming pool and on to the weir. We cross the weir and run back on the other side. Once we pass the Blutturm, we're almost there; it's not much further to the Altenbergsteg.

Facts

Distance: around 4.2 km

Conditions: tarmacked road and unpaved path, no ascents

Difficulty level: easy

Special features

There are 15 “BärnParcours” stations along the route. If you're looking for variety, you can incorporate a few exercises here that use different muscles than running.

A bit more than a warm-up

Here too, we start at the Altenbergsteg bridge, heading out of town along the riverbank, past the botanical gardens, grazing goats in summer, the Lorrainebad swimming pool and on to the weir. We cross the weir and run back on the other side. We pass the Blutturm, run past the Altenbergsteg, the Längmuur adventure playground, the nautical club house of the Aare Club Matte Bern and keep going straight on to Läuferplatz. Here, we take a look at the 16th-century Läuferbrunnen (Runner Fountain) and cross the Aare on the Untertorbrücke bridge. We turn left and follow the Altenbergweg until we reach a footpath that leads directly along the banks of the Aare to the Altenbergsteg.

Longer, including the bear pit

We again start at the Altenbergsteg bridge, heading out of town past the botanical gardens and the Lorrainebad swimming pool to the weir. We cross the Aare at the weir and run towards the city – across Läuferplatz through the Matte district, under the Dalmazibrücke bridge and with a view of the Federal Palace, past Marzilibad and the Gaskessel to the Schönausteg bridge.

We cross the Aare on the Schönausteg and run back past Schwellenmätteli, through the forest, along the Aare to the bear pit. We run between the Aare and the water basin for the bears to the stairs, where we go up under the Nydeggbrücke bridge and along the path until we come out at Klösterlistutz. From there, the route returns to the Aare, along the Altenbergweg through the district to a footpath that leads directly along the Aare to the Altenbergsteg.
